Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

A major treatment option for some types of knee pain is arthroscopic knee surgery. The other term for this is knee arthroscopy.

Purpose of the Surgery:

The following are some procedures during which an orthopaedic surgeon performs an arthroscopic knee surgery in Kolkata:
  • ACL Reconstruction: An important one among the four major ligaments of the knee is the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The tearing of this ligament can cause a lot of problems. The arthroscopic method is common for performing ACL surgery in Kolkata.
  • Meniscus Surgery: From the knee joint, the surgeon removes a portion of the meniscus cartilage during this surgery. The official term of this surgery is Meniscectomy.
  • Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation: The arthroscopic surgeon doctors in Kolkata use the arthroscopic method during this procedure for harvesting new cartilage cells after identifying the areas of damaged cartilage.
  • Lateral Release: The purpose of this procedure is to loosen the ligaments which are responsible for pulling the kneecap out of the groove.
  • Microfracture: When there is damage to the cartilage, the doctor stimulates the body to grow new cartilage in the damaged area using this treatment.
  • Cartilage Transfer: The surgeon moves cartilage to the damaged areas from the healthy parts of the joint in this procedure.

The Procedure

You will be given regional or general anaesthesia before the surgery. For getting access to the knee joint, the surgeon will create incisions or portals in the knee. He will insert a camera through one incision to place it on the joint. The use of the other incisions is for inserting the instruments necessary for the surgery. After the surgery is over, the surgeon will give instructions to wrap your knee in a soft bandage. You need to undergo physiotherapy to regain strength and motion of the joint.
